My One Week’s Experience with BSNL 3G – Hyderabad

BSNL has taken a good initiative launching it’s 3G services in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and in other major cities on 03 March 2010. I’ve been waiting to see 3G come alive in India so I rushed to Telephone Bhavan located at Saifabad and applied for a pre-paid connection. Got the connection on the very same day and it took 24 hours for activation. I recharged it with Rs. 120/- for 180 days that came along with a Promotional plan validity and Rs.110/- talktime. As a part of the Promotional offer BSNL is offering 25mb data and 50mins of video calling time Totally free !!

After recharging I tried to access the Internet but was unsuccessful. My precious Nokia 5800 threw me an error at my face saying Dude !! “Web:Unable to perform the operation”. I was bit confused and started searching for the error on Google  but didn’t find anything useful. So I went to BSNL customer care and asked the guy over there regarding the problem. He suggested me to send “GPRSPRE” to “53733″ and wait for 24 hrs to get it activated :( . I waited another long 24hrs but nothing happened. Furious, I called up customer care “tring tring” and they told me to delete current access points and download new access points by sending <Make> <model number> to “58355″ which didn’t work for my Nokia 5800. In the meantime a friend of mine suggested that I can download the settings by logging in to www.cellone.in website. Finally I got the settings and now I’m able to browse the Internet :) .

WHAT I DID… when I got access ??
First thing I did was checking the download speed. At Somajiguda area I got around 750kb/s.Well, till now I haven’t tried making any video call as in my friend & family circle no one has BSNL connection. I was able to make video calls to my brother on an application called “Fring”.I was able to hear the audio but no video was showing up “WTF”. I don’t realize where the problem lies.

The Internet experience was good but a bit expensive Rs.0.01/10kb. The BSNL website showing data top-ups but when I contacted customer care they said they didn’t have any information on that. I think BSNL will change the call rates once the promotional plan validity ends. I’m using it since a week and I’m happy with it. Signal is weak in some areas. I hope the GOVT. of India will auction the 3G spectrum in April as it promised as I would like to see more players in the 3G game ;) .

If you have any question about BSNL 3G in Hyderabad place a comment here. I may be able to help you out. Happy 3 Geeeing !!

What is the APN that you are using?

Just FYI that you can go to portal.bsnl.in to recharge/topup online. Unfortunately could not find a place online to buy those special data plan recharge vouchers. Do update if you find anything online in this regard.

  2. Krishna K Balla says:

Hi Uday, APN is “gprssouth.cellone.in”. Yeah I know we can recharge online but data plan vouchers are not available online.

  20. abhishek says:

my net is working but i dnt get the gud speed pls help me out
n if i go through intrenet stteings downloaded from cellone the net is not working
so i use these seetings given by nitin

  21. Krishna K Balla says:

@abhishek – even I’m not getting good speed lack of good signal. May be we need to wait for some more time till BSNL improves it’s network. I assume you are having problem while accessing Internet using your pc.

To make it work you need to set the APN in one touch access to gprssouth.cellone.in, because BSNL has changed it’s APN last year but in Nokia hasn’t changed it in its PC suite.

  22. radjane says:

hi…..every time when i try to install the settings it says \error occurred while processing the provisioning document\….but it connects to net …..very poor speed around 250 kbps only……(15-20kbps download speed)…….
i have SE G900 …..do u have any idea about this problem?

  23. Krishna K Balla says:

@radjane — if you are able to access internet that means you have correct configuration settings.. And about the speed you need to check your device specs once.. In gsmarena it is showing “http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_g900-2247.php” 3g speed will be upto 384kbps.

  24. Rohit says:

    Hey Krishna,

Thanks a mill for your post! :-) I too was facing the same problem. (With the Nokia 5800 GPRS settings), I called up the call center like 50 times to no avail. They keep telling me to send an SMS for settings, which kept failing, and then that it would take 24 hours to get it working. Wat bull they feed the public!! :(

Anyways, i got the settings from http://218.248.72.246/msp/html/ Just had to enter my phone number, the password theyd SMSd and then from Device Manager, selecting the phone make and model. Simple as that! :)

  25. Aarti says:

Thanks a ton Krishna, your post helped me a lot in installing settings to my N series mobile, I enjoy 3G service on my mobile but net is slow any suggestions….

  26. Krishna K Balla says:

@Aarti – You are welcome .. the speed depends on signal and user base and what device you are using.. as I said in earlier comment some old 3G devices supports up to 384kbps only. Please check your device specification once.

  27. Zazen says:

Hi Guys, I got to work my 3.5G connection with 700kbs speed on my Nokia 5235 mobile. Customer care was pathetic so i got to do some R&D: following are the things i found.

    1. Normally mobile set, if selected in Dual Mode will not pick the 3G tower because its signals are weak compared to the old GSM powerful signals. Its a good things from design point of view. But for we guys we want to have the 3G exp however weak it maybe. So what you have to do is put the phone in the 3G mode manually. In my phone (Nokia 5235 its the UMTS selection) Then restart the phone, go out or stand in the balcony it should catch the tower. In the tower area it showed 3.5G on my set when i walked to the balcony. I stay in Chandanagar Hyderabad.
    2. BSNL don’t have settings for 5235 but it has settings for 5230 and i think that is too for GPRS. So i did the 3G setting manually. Find the access point manually and named it as bsnlsouth. Pointed my Internet and WAP to this access point. all this you need to do in the settings -> connectivity section in the menu.

  28. Paul says:

Surprised that you are able to get good speeds near somajiguda area! I am using nokia 5800, but it doesn’t even detect 3g network near yasodha hospital!!! It is a complete waste now!

    Paul

  29. Krishna K Balla says:

Hi Paul, Even I’m not getting 3g signals at Somajiguda since two weeks .. I guess there is some problem at BSNL end. :(
